More maternity leave: would 5 days be enough for you?

9 January 2009 No Comment

I may return to work within a couple of months of having my baby: I work freelance, love what I do, am based at home and can set my own pace. However I certainly would not be back in the office just five days after a caesarean like French minister Rachida Dati. I believe, like some of the women writing in this Guardian opinion piece, that Dati is doing a disservice for all mums and dads. My partner works in Government and he is under quite enough pressure to remain at work: there is little allowance for paternity leave. Women should not see maternity leave as a weakness: instead it is a time to bond with your child, establish breastfeeding, and recover physically. High profile women need to consider this before trying to be superwoman.
