Mumpreneur Profile: Helen of The Beading Lady

The Beading Lady:

I’m a 33 year old WAHM with two children, daughter aged 8 (going on 18) and son aged 7. My husband, Stuart and I met 15 years ago in South Africa where we were both raised. Our children were born in South Africa and we moved to England 6 years ago. I’m very fortunate in that my husband is supportive of my business ideas and projects.

I was a stay at home Mum for the first few years of my children’s lives and then I worked as an administration assistant for just over a year. I found it really difficult when my children were ill and during school holidays to balance work, home and children so started looking for ideas on how to make money from home.

I’ve been making bracelets as a hobby for a while but then started selling a few to friends. In October 2008 my hubby suggested one day that I should put my other hobby together with the bracelets. I make cards, so after a few experiments I combined the cards and bracelets and created Beaded Bracelet cards. The unique idea of a card and a present in one and the Beading Lady was born!

I started by selling them on the playground to other Mums and then found www.misi.me.uk and have since sold a few on this lovely crafting website. I take orders for unique designs and colours too.

It’s been great making and selling these bracelet cards as I’m able to work around my children and their needs because I can make bracelets sitting on the couch chatting to them or helping them with their homework.

I do find myself getting a little distracted as it still feels like a hobby but I’m selling the product so must concentrate and stick to a deadline.
