The Trouble with Working Women

20 May 2009 No Comment

Have you been watching this documentary? I was shocked (if not surprised) to hear that 30,000 women each year lose their jobs because they get pregnant.

Check out this discussion of the programme over at Noble Savage’s blog. She looks into the factors holding women back at work that were not really addressed by the programme. At Cruella-Blog, Kate Smurthwaite who was interviewed on the programme wants to know, “what percentage of stay at home mothers do so at least partly because their job prospects are so hampered by sexism – certainly true of all the stay-at-home mums I know.” I certainly decided to go freelance because I could see few career jobs which allowed for school pick-up at 3.30, childhood illnesses, school plays and sports day.

If you’re interested in this, you might also want to read about why being child free can hinder your career too.
