Winning Mums: Best Kids Activities in Britain

MORE than 14,000 votes have been counted and the results of the prestigious What’s On 4 Little Ones Awards 2009 are now revealed!

The award programme, which is sponsored by pioneering children’s food company Organix and supported by Prima Baby & Pregnancy magazine, is now in its third year. It aims to celebrate the best pre-school activities across the UK, as voted for by parents, and to highlight the selfless work of all the volunteers who help run groups across the country.

And one innovative new health and fitness activity scooped two of the coveted awards. Runner Beans, a Birmingham-based group that run health and fitness programmes tailored specifically for young children, won both the Best New Activity award and the Organix Food Hero award, which celebrates those people helping little ones learn about healthy eating.

The awards are divided into three categories: national, for activities that are available in more than one area of the UK; local, for activities that are based in one area of the UK, and special awards for outstanding groups or individuals.

The winner of the Best National Baby Development Activity 2009 is Water Babies (www.waterbabies.co.uk), a group that run baby swimming classes
across the country.

The Best National Toddler Development Activity is Sign and Sign, (www.singandsign.co.uk) Britain’s longest running baby signing scheme,
while the Best National Pre-schooler Development Activity has been named as Gymboree (www.gymboree-uk.com).

Runner Beans, which is run by Kate Sanderson and Jackie Moon, won both Best New Activity and the Organix Food Hero Award. What’s On 4 Little Ones
founder Sam Willoughby commented: “What I most like about Runner Beans is their winning formula – a strong emphasis on fun, activity and healthy diet.
It’s so important to provide this activity for children up to the age of seven. By developing great habits up to this age I’m sure good habits are
being developed for life. Runner Beans has massive potential for the future and could go on to make a difference to many, many lives.”

Anna Rosier, MD of children’s food company Organix, which sponsors the awards, added: “At Organix we think it is important to encourage little ones to learn about healthy food whilst keeping fit and active. Kate and Jackie have a class with Runner Beans that combine both of these in a fun way and much more – what a great idea!”

The Best Local Activity was named as Runaround in Dingwell, Ross-shire (www.runaround.biz). The judges said: “Steve at Runaround has demonstrated
a fantastic commitment to the children and to the community at large. We were particularly impressed by the care and thought with which he has laid
out the play area and the fact he lays on events at no extra cost. The parents of the children who attend Runaround are full of praise for the activity.”

Every pre-school activity in the UK has the chance to be nominated for the awards, making the awards a true representation of how parents feel towards
what is on offer for their little ones. What’s On 4 Little Ones founder Sam Willoughby said: “Every year the awards get bigger and better. We’re so proud of all our winners who have clearly demonstrated excellence in their field.”

Sam, who was named Practical Parenting magazine’s Business Parent of the Year in 2007, added: “I also know how much the teachers and organisers
value being nominated, they put a lot of heart and soul into their activities so it’s such a great way for us all to say thank you.”
