Child Benefit to Stop at 13? What Do You Think?

12 June 2010 2 Comments

The Government has appointed Frank Field to look into child poverty and, according to the BBC, he will also consider stopping child benefit at 13 or taxing it. Currently, parents receive £20.30 a week for the eldest child and £13.40 for subsequent children, payments continuing until 19 if in full-time education. This costs the Uk £11bn each year. Mr Field says many mothers are “more engaged” with their work when their children reached 13 or 14 and the system could reflect that. ”They feel more secure with their children when they are over 13 and so on. If you have a crisis at work and can’t be home, it is not such a disaster as when you have a seven-year old coming home from school.”

What do you think?

STOP overpaid senior bankers etc and their bonuses. You would be taking away childrens pocket money , do you have any idea what 13+ children ask for/need in todays society to fit in? Should be other way round start child benefit form school age….eg 5 years onwards.
