There are many books out there trying to help people get a job. These are very good at what they do, but the job market being as competitive as it is, there is an opportunity to get back to basics and understand the key elements of job applications. This book, Applying for a Job by Sasa Jankovic has lots of simple effective pages on subjects ranging from CV preparation to applying for your first job. This alone is something that I haven’t yet seen attempted before in similar books and it is nice to see this section of the working population included this way.This is a book whose attraction is in its simplicity and ease of use. There are 100 or so pages that cover all of the stages of job hunting – from the online search, through the creation of a CV to the first (and second) interviews, to what you do with the eventual job offer. There are also sections on what to do if you’ve been away from the workforce for an extended period of time, and also a brief look at what to do if you’ve been discriminated against. A small but wide-ranging help list at the back of the book lists organisations and websites to look at for further information.

What I liked about this book was the fact that it answered questions that I remember thinking I’d asked in some of my interviews. I especially liked the suggestions to role play an interview beforehand, and to think of some questions for the interviewer. This is a book that I wish I’d had when I first started job-hunting. It will be a welcome addition to anyone who needs a little advice on how to go about it.
