New Club Penguin Magazine

This week, the kids have been having fun with the new Club Penguin magazine (£2.99).  We were sent our copies to review through the post, and within minutes of opening the magazine D had grabbed the free 7 day membership card and reactivated her penguin! I like kids magazines because they are fun and interactive and an alternative to being online all the time, so this wasn’t what I’d hoped for!
Having said that, once everyone looked at the magazine, it was great. It’s hard to find a magazine for D …

Turn your talent into a business by Emma Jone

What is your passion? Can you play an instrument, or sing a song? Or can you make something with such love and dedication that it shines? These and other questions are becoming more and more pertinent in this world of self-employment and following your dreams.
It is a terrible thing if you have a job in a corporation which you don’t enjoy. In my opinion, working for a living should be more than that. There should be a spring in your step as you approach the front door on a Monday …

heretical leadership

Heretical Leadership
Modern business management is like a religion. There are belief systems, processes and procedures that you must adhere to in order to make your company run smoothly. The idea that you might consider these tools as being detrimental to progress is something that isn’t even entertained. You deviate from these mantras at your own risk and no-one will follow you either.

Which is where “Heretical Leadership” by Barry Jacksoncomes in. Barry has written a fun book that pokes a lot of the hot air out of so-called management techniques. So …

Review: Jacqueline Wilson at the De La Warr Pavillion

I loved hearing Jacqueline Wilson’s story: the struggle to find a quiet place to write in her flat as she grew up, her love of a new notepad and pen from Woolies, the challenge of actually finishing a story. She had a massive stroke of luck as a teenager and got her first job, miles away from home, working for DCThompson, writing for magazines. Did you know that, as the youngest journalist  on the staff at the time, DCThompson named their new magazine, Jackie, after her?
Wilson talked a little about her new book, The …

Love Monster

Does your child ever feel left out? If so, read them Love Monster by Rachel Bright. It’s a fun bedtime story, in a world where almost every creature is cute, and Monster has no-one to love him. Like all good bedtime stories, Love Monster comes with a happy ending, but as all good heroes do, Monster has to make a journey first. Beautiful illustrations, bright colours, a crazy sense of humour and quirky use of words makes this a winner in our household. Watch out the the ‘Fluffy 2 the …

how to manage - Jo owen

Management is one of the overlooked aspects of modern working life. Yet, it is probably the most important after understanding why you work for a business, or work to run a business. Management can mean the difference between whether you keep your employees or lose them to a volatile and disruptive marketplace.
The vision behind a business carries many forms. At the heart of it there is the idea, the product or the service, and the role of the manager is to deliver that idea, product or service in a way …

In the perpetual struggle between the Head and the Heart, there has always been a challenge in making the two combine. You have the cold, clinical, analytical Head against the warm, fuzzy and imprecise Heart. Music has often been seen as a bridge to the two, combining the scientific study of frequencies, harmonics and chords, with the ephemeral beauty of a piece of music that enables you to say what you want in a form that you can’t understand.

‘Play Your Brain’ is an attempt by its authors, Annette Prehn and …

Facebook is a global phenomenon. Over 700 million people have accounts, and this number is increasing on a regular basis. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg is someone who will never need to feel the cold pinch of winter brought about by a lack of pennies to put in the gas meter. He and his fellow investors profit from the business end of the pre-eminent social network, and the ability of the network to use advertising.

In the same manner, there is an opportunity (such as in eBay) to harness the …

do it or ditch it

How many ideas do you have every day? One, Two? or more than that? And how many actually become things that you get around to doing anything about? I suspect that most new business ideas stay in the head of the entrepreneur who thought of them, never to be unleashed on the marketplace.

This idea generation is not a bad thing, but it can be wasteful. After all if you’re thinking about the next possible grand leap for your business, you’re not thinking about the here and now which might be …
