My husband Kes is a Manager at IBM. He is 37 and a qalified holistic crystal healer. Fantastic husband and father. Eldest daughter Jordan 11yrs – Asberger’s Syndrome – still attends mainstream school – helps me with fundraising every year – beautiful, well mannered and artistic. Youngest daughter Aaron 7yrs – I had cancer during my pregnancy with Aaron and was already seeking alternative cancer treatment because the one I was on was ineffectual – helps me every year with fundraisers – asthmatic – beautiful, well mannered and has a beautiful singing voice. We live in North Ayrshire, Scotland.
What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?
I spent 7 years as a military policewoman. I was ready to settle down and start family but didn’t want to raise a family in the military so I gave up my career and soon after I met Kes. We travelled india for 6 months. I gave birth to Jordan. I developed cancer during 2nd pregnancy. I always knew I needed and wanted a career where I could spent my time also with my own family. I love spending time with all children so childminding from home was the best option. I also work alongside Cancer Research UK and fundraise every year with family and friends.
When did you launch? 3 years ago.
How did you go about getting started? I browsed the internet for the information I needed, passed the necessary business course and took it from there.
What has worked well about your business? No commuting – spending time with my family whenever I want – working from a relaxed home environment helps children settle better.
What has been your biggest challenge so far? How have you dealt with it? Fighting for my life. I dealth with it by taking each day as it comes as if it were my last and enjoying it to the full.
How do you fit in work with the family? Very easily – business is set in a warm home environment so family come and go all the time and the children settle better.
What advice would you give to someone else wanting to work in this area? Firstly you need to be young at heart – enjoy spending time with children – fit & healthy – confident and outgoing.
I am a registered childminder (SCMA) and have been assessed by the Care Commission for suitability and have had Enhanced Disclosure Checks completed. I aim to provide a flexible service for parents who work full time, commute, work shifts and weekends. Care is available from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday. Arrangements for earlier, later and weekends may be made. For parents who require care for an evening out, I offer a babysitting service. This would be done on my premises.
