Name of Business:

Tell us about your family.

My lovely family consists of my husband Michael, plus my two boys: Jonny – five and Jimi – 20 months.

When did you launch?

January 2008

How did you go about getting started?

Hitting the age of 40 led to some soul-searching .I decided that what I really wanted to do was to indulge my passion for writing and satisfy a long held ambition to own my own business. A friend mentioned magazine publishing so I decided to look into the reality of what this would entail- a combination of web surfing and talking to those in the know. Having completed my research, I put pen to paper and started to produce a detailed plan.

What has worked well about your business?

The business is growing, and advertisers are renewing, largely due to the proposition I have worked so hard to create, our quality and our highly competitive rates.

What has been your biggest challenge so far? How have you dealt with it?

The existence of other local magazines. I anticipated this challenge from the outset and so we put a lot of thought into having a clear proposition that would really set it apart from the others.

How do you fit in work with the family?

I spend one day a week on the magazine, plus an hour on the other days .My evenings and weekends are free.

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to work in this area?

What do you want to achieve? How much of a passion is it for you? Passion is a crucial ingredient.

How much money do you want to make from the venture? How will the revenue be obtained? If some selling is required, do you have the experience and will to do this?

Do as much research as possible, and plan to succeed. Have a proper business and marketing plan. Anticipate the impact it will have in terms of time, money, people, motivation and effort on absolutely everything you hold dear.

If you have a flexible working business opportunity, please explain briefly, what you offer and how people find out more.

Advertising sales is the most obvious one, particularly if you have experience. We are also happy to take on freelance journalists.
