Mumpreneur News: Rachel of Giraffe Media

Ever dreamed of setting up your own publishing business? Mumpreneur Rachel Southwood did just this, and now Giraffe Media could be crowned a winner in the first national Nectar Business Small Business Awards.

Rachel’s business breakthrough occurred five years ago in her back bedroom when Giraffe Media launched what is now the UK’s favourite fun-sized bridal magazine, Wedding Ideas. Today, the magazine could well be Taunton’s greatest export, propelling Giraffe Media onto the publishing map! It’s Britain’s best-selling A5 wedding magazine and employs a close-knit team of 13 people.

Since starting Wedding Ideas, Rachel has suffered her fair share of difficulties, including the death of her husband aged 33, bringing up a young son and buying out her original business partner in 2008. This only makes the success of the business even more remarkable and during the buyout, offers of over £1million from investors interested in taking over the magazine regularly landed on Rachel’s desk.

However, selling the business is far from Rachel’s thoughts as she continually strives to expand; “Wedding Ideas doesn’t just stop at the magazine! Our website, newsletter, shop, new venture mylocalweddingevent.co.uk and our annual Wedding Awards all contribute to its popularity. With Wedding Ideas we have created a publication that is like nothing else in the market.

“With many publishing houses falling casualty to the credit crunch, I’m immensely proud of our thriving company and even more proud to be based in Taunton!” comments proud owner Rachel.

Giraffe Media is just one of many hugely successful and dedicated small UK enterprises that have entered the Nectar Business Small Business Awards. The awards have been set up to acknowledge and celebrate the successes and achievements of small and medium sized businesses all over the country. The awards are open until 18th May and three winning entrants, announced in July, will receive not only the recognition they deserve for all their hard work, but also £2,000 and 50,000 Nectar points.

Charlie Humphreys, Head of Nectar Business which has founded the awards says: “Everyone who runs a small business, especially in the current climate, has to work extremely hard to get it off the ground and make a success of it. These awards represent a fantastic opportunity to celebrate great business ideas, business practice and people and I would like to wish everyone who enters the best of luck!”
