Mumpreneurs at the Baby Show

One in four exhibitors at The Baby Show, London, 16 – 18 October 2009 is a mumpreneur. To support the growing trend for women to start a business Deborah Meaden, star of Dragons’ Den is appearing at The Baby Show on Sunday 18 October. Deborah will be there to support her current investments and advise up-and-coming mumpreneurs.

The Buggyboot, a practical storage solution for lightweight buggies, was launched in August 2008 by Charlotte Evans and Carolyn Jarvis, both mothers themselves. Meaden invested £80k for 30% of and with her guidance Buggyboot has since secured an exclusive contract with Mothercare.

Also appearing at The Baby Show, is another Dragon’s Den success story, Magic Blackout Blind (a portable and temporary way to black out windows). Founders Neil and Laura Westwood secured £100,000 investment from Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden in return for 40% of the business.

Both Buggyboot and Magic Blackout Blind’s success stories are to feature as a follow up stories on Dragons’ Den on Tour on 7 October 9pm on BBC2.

The Dragon’s Den star will be joined on The Comfort Pure with Prima Baby Stage at The Baby Show by these successful mumpreneurs where they will talk about the trials of juggling young children and a new business and offer budding mumpreneurs an insight into their business success.

The Baby Show will also feature companies that pitched to the Dragon’s Den but found success without their support. These include Trunki, a company set up by Rob Law, who suffered rejection at the hands of the dragons, but since went on to succeed. As well as counting Mothercare as a stockist, he has sold over 280,000 of the lightweight ride-on suitcases for children. Cuddledry on the other hand, founded by Helen Wooldridge and Polly Marsh, two long-term friends and working mums, turned the dragons’ offers down, but have gone on to become a multiple award-winning must-have product for new parents.

The Baby Show, the UK’s largest parenting event, taking place on Friday 16 – Sunday 18 October at London’s Earls Court, promises unbeatable shopping, fantastic entertainment and expert advice with 250 companies, ranging from big brands to new mumpreneurs, all in one place.
