More Mumpreneurs for 2010

Is this the year you plan to start your own business? If so, you’re in good company. New research from BT has revealed that one mum in 10 wants to run her own business, and 15 per cent of women have started their own business since having children.

BT questioned 1,200 women and found that they aspired to having their own business for a number of reasons:

  • to choose their own working hours,
  • to balance their work and family lives,
  • or to be their own boss.

BT found that online social networks had created more business opportunities for mothers to run a company from their lounge, kitchen or bedroom. Ivan Croxford, general manager of digital marketing services at BT Business, said: “We’re witnessing the rise of the mumpreneurs. Mums across the UK are embracing the internet and keeping the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit alive.

“We’ve seen evidence of this on our social business network, BT Tradespace where we’re increasingly connecting with women starting their own businesses. We need to ensure that this vital community gets the right support to thrive.”
