If you’re on the internet, then you probably know about social media. Along with other sites, Facebook, Myspace and now Twitter dominate our personal lives in a way that we never even conceived five years ago. Now business wants to get in on the act. It has woken up to the idea that there are many more different ways to communicate with customers than the more traditional methods. The problem is to identify what to do about it.
‘This is Social Media’ is a book which attempts to clarify this in a way that it useful to even the greenest of beginners. It’s not a large book, and it even states that there may not even be a role for social media in your business. That’s what makes this book a little different from the rest. By arguing that you might not have needed to buy the book, is a sign that it wants to take itself seriously. But don’t stop reading quite yet, for those that do need social media, this is a very useful guide.
There is a little bit of hand-holding at the beginning, especially if you’re one of those people that understands the terminology. The proper benefit that this book provides is an overview of the more important social media sites, and a good starting point for all. The sites covered read like a directory of the most important social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube & Ecademy, but also considering less obvious sites such as personal & commercial blogging, podcasting as well as finding a way to incorporate all of this into the rapidly expanding mobile website arena.
Overall this is a good foundation stone into the world of social media. There is a danger that even the most complete book on the subject will be quickly overtaken by events, but using the principles described in this book, there will be lots you know already to make sure that it’s a success.
