Hi, my name is Vicky Draycott and I started my own business, called Purple Star Toys when my youngest child was about to celebrate his first birthday. I am married and am mummy to two fantastic little stars, aged 3 and almost 2.At Purple Star Toys, we specialise in top quality wooden toys and puppets and can supply everything from pocket money toys to balance bikes, dolls houses and ride on toys.
My business launched in August 2009 and we are just coming up to our first birthday, which makes me feel very proud.
I started the business through a love for quality wooden toys, and wanting to provide a good life for my family, though we’re still working on this bit!
I am currently juggling family life, a part time job and running my business – so some days don’t know whether I’m coming or going!
Having A Level psychology and Sociology, a BTEC in childcare, experience in working with under fives, retail experience and now having my own children, all these things have led me to the path I now take.
I feel happy and content in my work and love the responses I get when people see my toys. It’s so nice to get positive feedback and reinforces that you’re going in the right direction.
I work a lot in the evenings, when the children are in bed, doing all the admin and paperwork etc. I like visiting playgroups and mums and tots groups during the week. This fits in really well with family life, as I can take my little stars with me. Then when I do parties or weekend events, I leave Daddy in charge!
I have learnt so much over the past year and relish the opportunity to learn loads more over the coming years.
I’m looking forward to introducing new suppliers and building my customer database. I have some exciting new projects in the pipeline, including compiling my own book.
In the next 12 months I would like to give up my part time job and focus on growing my business full time. This would be a major step forward for me and one that I look forward to each day.
I have grown in confidence and feel like a whole new person – a few years ago I never would have thought of starting my own business – but it just shows that you can do anything you put your mind to…
