Hi, I’m Amy Taylor, a 38 year old chartered accountant and proprietor of Amy Taylor Accountancy. I have two children, aged 7 and 2, and a husband, soon to be 40. I live in Bedfordshire, but my clients are located all over the UK. I started my business in 2008, when my second child was just 6 months old. It was around this time that I realised that it was crazy to carry on commuting into London and working full time, when so much of my earnings would go on nursery fees and travel, notwithstanding the fact that I would hardly ever see my children. This prompted me to go about getting my practising certificate and luckily I also had a couple of contacts that wanted to use me right away. But the real turning point for my business was when I joined local networking group, Mum’s The Boss. I met other like minded Mums in Business, heard inspirational speakers, and got introduced to the world of Twitter. It was through Twitter that I discovered there was a huge demand from other Mums in Business for accountancy services and that many of them would prefer to work with another Mum.
To further support Mums in Business, I developed a blog, www.amyaccountant.wordpress.com, full of hints and tips for Mums new to business, and those who may be looking for tax savings and accounts advice. I also support Mums in Business wherever I can through seminars.
My biggest challenge so far has been planning for the future, and identifying where I need external help. Fortunately I have a fantastic assistant who now looks after all my admin, freeing up my time to focus on clients, prospects and the nitty gritty of the accounts and tax calculations. I can see that at some point in the future I would like another qualified accountant with experience of accounts preparation to assist me on a part-time basis. If you’re interested, please let me know so that I can keep your details on file.
And if you’re looking to start your own flexible working pattern, I would highly recommend it. You get to choose your own work/life balance and plan your own future. And if you need any accounts and tax help along the way, you know who to call, don’t you?!
