Most people if they are asked, will say that the one big problem that they have is not feeling valued in their work. They ‘turn up’ for 36 ½ hours a week, and then go home, totally disengaged and disillusioned. The ultimate consequence of this is that they leave that business. “Inspirational Manager” by Judith Leary-Joyce uses the voices of 13 Inspirational Managers to put together a plan for existing managers to change their role for the benefit of all of their subordinates and hopefully change their lives.
From understanding what it takes to be an inspirational manager to the difference between a mentor and a coach, this handbook is to be used at every stage of the managerial process. There are sections on how to build teams to maximise the effect of inspiration, how to manage the Performance Management Process as well as a section on how to delegate.
With action plans built in for each chapter, there is a positive feel to this book which impresses that a manager needs to be pro-active about initiating change to inspire their charges. It’s no coincidence that the ‘If they build it, they will come” is quoted early on in the book from ‘Field of Dreams’. The ‘it’ of this book is the cornfield that Kevin Costner cut down to build a baseball pitch. This book will allow you to build yourself into the manager that will inspire and lead others in the pursuit of bigger and better goals.
I found the references to real-life problems useful in that it put a practical outlook on the things that were trying to be taught by the author. The appendices are a little thin, but I don’t think that this matters in this case. There is enough detail and suggestions in this book to give advice to even experienced managers that will allow them to inspire others.
On one of the first pages there is a quote from Marianne Williamson. She says that “Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure”. All that needs to happen now is for you to read this book and take its advice to inspire others.
