Hobbies into business: More Arts and Craft Ideas

21 January 2013 3 Comments

If you don’t want to create and sew garments, think about toys and dolls. Again, check the regulations with your local trading standards. Another sewing idea is to offer repairs and alterations. Many people without sewing skills or short on time would love to be able to drop items round to someone with a sewing machine for hemming and alteration. See if your local college has dressmaking courses if you need to develop your skills in this area, and look into insurance, just in case a repair goes wrong.

Art, crafts and photography

If you love to paint or take photographs, it is encouraging to know that many mums, and dads, have made successful second careers out of their love of creative arts. Think about how your unique talents can best be used, and what you can offer that might be different or unusual, as this makes it easier to sell. Card making, for example, is an area with lots of competition so look for a unique niche. Could you specialise in birth announcements, wedding or party invitations? Or, could your angle be the illustrations you create for the front of the cards? How about developing a line in business stationery? Get a good relationship with a local printer and see what other stationery services you could offer. Alternatively, focus the business on children. Look at the events children celebrate and offer kids birthday cards, letters from Santa, or cards from the tooth fairy.

I’m sure the sewing repairs idea would be great – we are all getting a bit more thrifty at the moment – or maybe teaching classes so we can do our own (and not ask Grandma everytime, like my kids do!)
