Mumpreneur Profile: Jenny Williams of the Detective Project

Name of Business:                 The Detective Project

Your Name and Age:              Jenny Williams, 42

Tell us about your family:      Two children, 9 and 11, and husband Martin, a teacher

What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?

I was a police detective for 14 years then took a career break when my children were young.  I tasted self-employment through Pheonix Trading which convinced me to set up my business – originally called CSI Kids, now The Detective Project.  We provide detective birthday parties, educational workshops and corporate events for children or adults based on “scene of crime” analysis.

When did you launch?                        September 2010

How did you get started?

I planned a detective-themed party for my children and they loved it so I planned my business, designed my website and went for it!

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?

I work harder than I’ve ever worked but don’t count my hours because I love it.  It works with my family and I can be there when my children need me.

What’s the thing you least enjoy about running your own business?

The accounts.  A necessary evil but so dull (apart from the bottom line!).

What has worked well about your business?

Finding a gap in the market and filling it with a fresh exciting party and events idea.

How do you fit in work with the family?  Is your partner supportive of your business?

Compared to the police it’s a great work/family balance.  I’ve never had a 9-5 job so working weekends is normal and school holidays tend to be a quieter business time. My supportive husband is also my co-director and assists with big workshops as well as lots of childcare.

Are you working towards a financial goal for your business?

I have a sum in my head I’d like to earn and lots of mini goals along the way.

Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment?  Tell us about it.  If not when do you think it will come?

I am launching my UK franchise operation this month and it will come when I award my fifth franchise.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?

With a solid local business, a national franchise network, a head office team and many thousands of happy customers.
