sun protection zoggsKeeping your children safe in the sun is a number one priority for parents. We have all experienced the uncomfortable and annoying feeling of sunburn, and we don’t want our children to experience that feeling, if it can be avoided. Sunburn can cause pain, dehydration and fevers; therefore sun protection is crucial for a happy and healthy holiday with your kids.

As we hit the peak of British summer time, we take a look at the important matter of sun care, the best ways to protect your children and have a brilliant summer in the sun;

Here are our top tips to guarantee a sunburn free summer with your children;

  • Babies less than 6 Months
    it is important to keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight, whether this is under an umbrella, tree or canopy on his / her pram. Keep your baby hydrated with regular bottles of water or juice, and also keep them dressed in cool clothing.

  • Sun Exposure
    Try and limit your children’s exposure to the sun between the hours of 10am and 2pm.This is when the sun is at its highest, and UV rays at their strongest, therefore this can be the most damaging for your children.
  • Sun Cream
    Always use a high protector sun cream for your children, 50+ is recommended by researches for young children. When purchasing your suncream, products designed especially for kids are best, as they generally have a very high factor and are gentle on the skin.

  • Suncream Application
    Remember to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading out in the sun, giving the cream time to absorb into to the skin. Suncream also needs to be reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Swimwear
    Children’s swimwear can now help to protect them in the sunshine. Many brands including swim experts Zoggs have a range of great float suits for children which povide maximum sun protection UPF 50+, and also protect your child’s shoulders and the back of his / her neck from the sun.
  • Hats and Sunglasses
    Hats are extremely important to keep the sun off your child’s head and face. Hats with a longer flap at the back are great for protecting the back of your child’s neck. Your children’s should also wear sunglasses with at least 99% UV Protection; the best protection available for your children’s eyes.
  • After Sun Protection
    After sun protection is equally as important for your children’s skin. The sun dries out your skin, so be sure to use “After sun Lotion” to cool and moisturise your children’s skin after a day in the sun. Also encourage your children to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration after fun in the sun.

  • Lead By Example
    Finally, set a good example for your children in the sun. If you are wearing sun cream and also following the above rules, your children will learn from your example and understand the importance of sun protection.

Have a great summer everyone!
