I am Samantha Grig, ages 28. I have a 5 year old daughter called Eevey and I am engaged to be married next year to my lovely fiancé Nick. Before I launched my Business in September 2013 I had trained to be a teacher but with childcare costs rising and no full time jobs available, I decided to take the plunge and begin my knitwear business. I began by saving as much as I could and designing a small range of beautiful hand knitted accessories that were of great quality. Then I booked into as many fairs as I could to get my product out there and it’s grown from there. The first large fair I done was possibly the scariest bit about starting the business. I had sat at home designing and knitting for months with no idea if people would like what I had produced. But thankfully we had a wonderful response.
My favourite thing about running my own business is defiantly the fact that I don’t have to miss any of my daughters school plays etc. I very much work around her. My partner Nick is extremely supportive and helps out a lot with the paper work side, which is defiantly my least favourite thing. I would much rather just design and knit all day however the paper work keeps things running smoothly.
We defiantly have financial goals within the business, I believe you have to aim high and dream big to get anywhere in life. You will never get there if you do not try. My aim right now though is to make as many people as possible aware of my brand. To get people supporting British business and to be buying good quality hand knitted British products. All of our products are made here in UK using British wool and/or Alpaca.
In five years time I would like to see my brand stocked in boutiques and to be attending some of the bigger fairs in London. I also would like to be offering workshops to teach people to knit as I feel it’s really important to keep this wonderful craft alive.
