Kate McEwan 38 Reflexologist and Foot Healthcare Practitioner
I live with my partner Ben and my son David in North Bristol, and run a domiciliary service of Foot Healthcare and Reflexology in Bradley Stoke and the surrounding area.
Before I launched my business in 2003 I had quite a few unfulfilling jobs so I was really ready to make a change. I started working part-time alongside more secure employment and it wasn’t until 2011 that I went fully self-employed.
I love the independence that I have being my own boss, but the insecurity of income can be a downside.
Having satisfied customers who keep returning is my biggest success.
Originally my biggest mistake was not marketing myself properly, but having learnt the hard way, I make sure good marketing is one of my top priorities.
I was a single parent for almost 10 years before I met my partner so I have had to ensure that work fits around school times. Ben is really supportive and helps a lot to make sure I can see clients in the evening now.
I have an “I’ve made it” moment on most working days when I see how much benefit my clients get from their treatments. I know it sounds cheesy, but that is the most important thing for me.
My next business goal is to move from doing exclusively home visits to having a permanent clinic, and I expect to achieve this in the next 12 months.
