Tell us about your family: I am married to my South African husband and we have two sons, Tom,13 and Matthew, 11. We live in Surrey in a village outside Farnham,
What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?
I had a career in investment banking working in London, Paris, New York, Frankfurt and latterly Tokyo. I stopped when I was pregnant with my son Tom who was born in Tokyo. We work with an orphanage in Cape Town which is still a big part of our lives. I wanted to create The Organiseher TM and toyed with how to juggle and do it for several years before setting up organise-us in February 2009.
How did you get started?
A massive learning curve and dreaming of creating a brand which would offer high quality stationery, accessories, leather goods and articles which are beautiful but serve a practical purpose at a reasonable price.
What’s your favourite thing about running your own business
Seeing and hearing how our products are enjoyed by our customers. Mental stimulation, flexibility.
What’s the thing you least enjoy about running your own business
One is always on call to it and I find it hard to have a quiet mind as I am always thinking of things to do in it. It us a bit like a third child.
What has worked well about your business?
The product range, year on year growth, freedom to explore new direction in it and above all using my products!
What’s been your biggest business mistake? How did you deal with it?
Following advice to produce with a certain manufacturer in Asia in the first year. The first batch of books had a flaw, they sold like hot cakes and I had to track and replace them all.
In the second year we moved our production to the UK which while significantly more expensive has been incredibly satisfying on many levels such as quality, relationship and supporting British manufacturing.
Both my boys and my husband are completely brilliant and could not support me more.My mother has helped where she can and has been fabulous. Thank you always to them.
Are you working towards a financial goal for your business?
Year on year sales are increasing and corporate and bespoke work continues to grow. I do have financial goals for it but am not going to reveal it!
Would you ever give up your business to do something else?
I would love it to have grown to a level where I can take less of a hands on role while being involved strategically and creatively, there are other projects I currently do not have time to pursue.
Do you have an exit strategy?
Organise-us would fit well into a higher end brand as a diffusion brand or into a larger retailer as an own brand, so let’s see.
Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment? Tell us about it. If not when do you think it will come
I am not easily satisfied so no, not yet.
Where do you hope to be in five years time?
For organise-us to be the definitive diary and notebook brand in England at it’s price point.
If you have a flexible working business opportunity, please explain briefly what you offer and how people find out more.
