Mumpreneur profile: Ellie of Eleanor Mary Designs @notonthehighstreet #mumsinbiz #pitchup

28 January 2017 No Comment

EMD1 Tell us about your family: I am Ellie, 28 and live in Shropshire with my husband, Daniel, and our one year old son Thomas.

What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?

Before starting Eleanor Mary Designs I was working full time as a School Mentor in a secondary school. Starting up Eleanor Mary Design on my maternity leave, meant I was able to take more time off to be with my son, and also has now given me the choice to return part time, giving me the rest of my time to divide between running my business and watching my son grow up.

When did you launch?

I officially launched EMD back in January 2016, but had been making my own crafts for friends and family for a few years prior to that. I had always been interested in crafts and design, and it wasn’t until my wedding, May 2013, that I fully caught the bug!

Personalised Memorable Dates PrintHow did you get started?

I made all of my own wedding stationery in the lead up to my wedding, May 2013. This made me realise I had a passion for creating and designing. It took me a while to gain the confidence to start my own business, but after making some milestone cards for a close friend in 2015, and after much support from friends and family, I decided to take the plunge in January 2016. It has been a fantastic first year, and I am excited to see what happens next!

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business

The flexibility it gives me, allowing me to be home more with my family. This just would not be possible otherwise. I love interacting with other likeminded creatives, and I absolutely love seeing people using my products. Even a year down the line it is still very surreal!

Accounts! Need I say more? Me and Maths just don’t get on!

What has worked well about your business?

I attended notonthehighstreet.com’s Pitch Up event last April which, there is absolutely no doubt, has significantly made an impact on my business. I met with two lovely members of the NOTHS team, and pitched my brand to them in the hopes I could become a partner and be part of such a fantastic business. The outcome was amazing, and I signed up there and then! Since joining NOTHS my business has grown so much, sales have doubled, if not tripled, and the support I receive from the NOTHS team is second to none. I am chuffed to be part of it.

This is hard. I can’t pin point one mistake as such, but I definitely feel the one thing that can stop me from achieving, is myself. I am a huge natural worrier, and have suffered with anxiety. Putting your products out there for the world to see can make even the most confident person a little anxious, in the hopes people like your work! Luckily the feedback I receive is amazing, so I just need to learn to trust myself a bit more!

How do you fit in work with the family?

Fitting work around family life can be tough. I tend to do the most of my work during nap times, or when Thomas has gone to sleep in the evening. My husband is incredibly supportive, even though I am sure it drives him mad at times! He was the one who convinced me to attend NOTHS’s Pitch Up event, so I have a lot to thank him for!

I don’t have any particular financial goals in mind, maybe that is a little unorganized and naïve of me. I do have some goals I would like to achieve this year, such as launching my own website and selling more of cards to small, independent shops, among a few others!

Would you ever give up your business to do something else?

I honestly can’t imagine giving up EMD. I absolutely love the flexibility it allows me to have, and it makes me extremely happy! Who knows what the future holds, but for now I have no plans to give this up.

Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment?  Tell us about it.  If not when do you think it will come

I don’t think I have had an ‘I’ve made it moment’, yet. But I have definitely had a few ‘Wow, I guess my work is alright then if they like it!’ moments! Moments when I am tagged into amazing photos using our cards on Instagram, every time I get an order gives me a little flutter of excitement! The moment NOTHS said we would love you to be a partner, a huge flutter of excitement! And the moment my husband and I made the decision for me to only return to my ‘day job’ part time, to give me the extra time to continue to work on EMD. Without his support and encouragement, I don’t think we would be anywhere near where we are today. Thank you love!

Where do you hope to be in five years time?

I hope to be happy, healthy, and still continuing the dream of running my own business! I don’t like to put too much pressure on myself with specific goals.
