Why remote work is gaining momentum & how you can get involved

Over the past few years, remote work has experienced a gradual increase. All around the world, remote work is gaining momentum across a range of industries. As a result, remote work is no longer just a trend: it is now becoming an entire industry. Workplace flexibility and telecommuting have become a top priority for many people in the workforce, from mothers who require more flexibility to technically-minded individuals who prefer to work on their own.

There are many reasons why remote work is on the up and up: easier job accessibility, better economic stability, and lower overhead costs are just a few of the reasons why. Here’s what you need to know about the growing remote workforce and how you can get involved:

Higher Autonomy, HIgher Productivity

More businesses of all sizes are better understanding how they can save more money while simultaneously increasing productivity among staff. For instance, the State of Workplace Productivity Report found that 65% of full-time employees who were surveyed believed remote work would allow them to be more productive. On the other hand, macro corporation IBM was able to save $100 million in just one year after they implemented their remote work program.

A major reason why productivity is so high among remote employees is because they don’t feel obligated to fill a 9-5 timeline. For example, if perhaps one of your team members has completed their duties within four hours. With nothing left to do, they browse the Web and wait around for another task to come through the pipeline. Employers pay for that downtime, whereas remote employees work within their own time frames. This high level of autonomy has made resulted in plenty of success for remote companies and individuals.

“The best way to encourage productivity is to encourage individuals to take ownership over how they manage their own time and resources,” productivity expert Robby Slaughter said during an interview with HubSpot. “This is a wonderfully self-correcting process: we want people who are self-starters and are able to operate independently. Granting workers freedom over when, how, and where they work creates proof of their work ethic in a way that trying to control them cannot.”

Create a Self System

One of the most difficult aspects of working remotely is learning how to manage your time independently. In some cases, you’ll have a set range of hours that require computer dedication, while in other cases you’ll work with deadlines and can disperse your time in order to reach that deadline however you see fit. Either way, without the traditional confinements of an office, you are gifted with a significant amount of freedom, and not everyone understands how to manage this appropriately. Take advantage of project management tools and digital planners like Wunderlist. Always mark your calendar and set reminders for various deadlines and project initiatives.

Find a Workspace

As a remote employee you have the freedom to work from anywhere, but this can be easier said than done. If possible, set aside a space in your home and create a home office setup. Some stay at home jobs are awesome if you are a beginner. This doesn’t have to be a dedicated room; it can be a corner in your living room or bedroom. What’s important is that it has all the nuts and bolts of a regular office, and that you have everything you need to get your work done and reliable, high-speed internet plans.

It’s also important for remote workers to switch up their environment from time to time when they can. Spending too much time at home on and off of work hours can become disenchanting. Instead, opt for a local coffee shop, library, or coworking space. Depending on your location, you may be able to get a monthly membership for a small price. If you travel often, consider opting for a Croissant membership, which is an app that allows individuals to utilize coworking spaces around the world.
