Parents in business: Leonie of EmpowerMe

Leonie Huie, 40, is a mother of twin girls aged 2 and married to Josh who is a personal trainer. Find out about her journey to create EmpowerMe, a company supporting mums with business start-ups and career development.

What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?

I was teaching full-time as secondary school teacher in London.

When did you launch?

I opened my company EmpowerMe on 1st February 2020.

How did you get started?

In August 2019 I had an idea to start a networking event for women to meet, share ideas and support each other. This networking event I called Empower Me. I had my first event on 29th September 2019 which was fantastic, but I wanted to do more and that’s when Empowerme the company was born in February 2020 with the aim of supporting mums, just like me, to kick start a new business or develop their career whilst boosting work-life balance.

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?

Meeting new mums and hearing their stories. I find this fascinating, as I love helping people.

What’s the thing you least enjoy about running your own business?

Paperwork!

What has worked well about your business?

Being able to deliver face-to-face masterclasses so far but my business is still very new so there’s so much more I’m looking forward to doing once life resumes normality from the coronavirus, which has impacted business growth, as I haven’t been able to network or deliver masterclasses or events in person.

What’s been your biggest business mistake?

Spending too much time on social media and not enough focusing on my customers and what they need. It’s so easy to fall into the social media hype of Instagram and Facebook let alone the other platforms. I now schedule posts and limit my time online focusing more on delivering services to my customers (Mums) which will be online for now.

How do you fit in work with the family?

I live by my calendar-without it I can’t imagine what life would be like.

Are you working towards a financial goal for your business?

Yes. Financial goals are really important.

Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment?

Not yet, it will come when I have help at least 100 mums achieve their goals. I’m just starting out but it’s an exciting journey I’m looking forward to.

Where do you hope to be in five years time?

I want to have a business that runs itself in the sense that every aspect of it is thriving. There are four parts to EmpowerMe: Training, Coaching, Events and Retreats. In 5 years I want to have helped thousands of mums.
