Parents in business: Kelly of Books for Twins

Kelly Perrin, 38, wrote and self-published a bedtime story for twins called ‘I’ll miss you while you’re sleeping.’ It’s a book designed specifically for twins. Kelly says, “There are few books offering this kind of representation.” Kelly is mum to 6 year old twins; Jessica and Henry, the inspiration for her book, and also has a stepdaughter who is 24. Read on to discover Kelly’s journey to write her book, and her mission to ensure twins can see people like them in the books they read.

I have been self employed for 15 years. I’ve had a few businesses. My first was a dog walking and boarding business which I sold after 5 successful years. I am a designer and photographer and I co own and run an insurance brokerage with my husband. I published my IVF journey initially so when I realised there was a gap in the market for a book for twins it made sense for that to be the next natural movement for me.

Initially I had a big launch plan in place to do lots of visits to Twins clubs and go around the country doing read-a-longs. My books arrived from the printers in March 2020 the day before the first national lockdown! So my plans to launch had to quickly be moved to an online launch which was not as successful as I’d hoped.

Every night I kiss my children goodnight and I say ‘I’ll miss you while you’re sleeping’ so I knew from the beginning that would be the title of the book. I sat with my twins, Jessica and Henry and we talked about what our favourite things to do together were. I started to write a poem and the story just flowed from there.

My favourite thing about Books for Twins is the reaction I get from other twin parents. I get lots of private messages saying thank you for writing it and for giving twins a book they can recognise themselves in. I think with any business it’s important to have a purpose and not just sell for the sake of selling.

Books for Twins has really inspired my daughter to write books. She often sits and writes stories in her bedroom then reads them to us proudly. It feels amazing to have inspired her to write. Both my children get excited when we sell a book, they enjoy helping me package the book up and they love to physically post them on the way to school – it’s a great lesson that they can be anything they want to be. They were so involved in the whole process from writing the book to getting samples and picking printers. So for them to help post them and get excited about sharing the story with others is a really positive experience.

My biggest mistake was thinking I could write the book and then just sell it! I definitely didn’t account for how hard it would be to get the book ‘seen’ online. But once a few people posted started reviews on twins’ groups and pages on Facebook the sales just started coming in.

I’ve not had my ‘I’ve made it moment’ yet but I get such a buzz every time I get a notification to say that someone has brought a book I instantly feel inspired to start writing the second book an the third.

In five years, I hope to have a selection of Books for Twins which will follow the different phases of childhood. The second book which is in the works is about being a twin but being your own person.
