Image via EHRCThe Equality and Human Rights Commission has called on Government to address the wide- ranging pregnancy and maternity discrimination that around 390,000 women face at work each year. In its latest survey, in partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the EHRC found that despite 77% of working mothers reporting potentially discriminatory or negative experiences, only around a quarter (28%) raised the issue with their employer, only 3% went through their employer’s internal grievance procedure, and less than 1% pursued a claim to the employment tribunal. The EHRC is recommending that the Government takes a number of steps including preventing employers from asking about a woman’s plans for a family at interview stage.
