Dadpreneur Profile: Andy Dyche of Avon

IMG_1776Your Name and Age: Andy Dyche, turning 40 this month.

I live in Adeyfield, Hemel Hempstead, with my partner Brena, and my two sons. Matthew, is 8 and starts Year 4 in September and Zachary is 3 and moving on to nursery at the same time.

 What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition?

Before Avon I was working in the NHS as a decontamination supervisor, but I found that the shifts were long and didn’t fit around my home life. I decided to leave so that I could reclaim my work/life balance and spend more time with Matthew and Zachary and didn’t miss them growing up and all the milestones they’re yet to overcome. I found my transition to Avon a breath of fresh air as I finally had time and flexibility to fit in the things I truly care about.

IMG_1815When did you launch? How did you get started?

I’ve been an Avon Representative since last September after meeting my partner Brena in August. She was working as an Avon Representative herself and suggested the idea to me when I decided I  wanted a more fulfilling career that I could fit around my other commitments, most of all childcare and Brena’s healthcare. Before we met she suffered a stroke meaning that she wasn’t able to travel around as easily, but we met I suggested I could help her with her business alongside my own, meaning I could support her and the family as a whole.

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?

My business first and foremost means that I have the ability to be ready and waiting at the school gates for my boys. I’m able to have more time to bond with them and experience them growing up. Family comes first and with Avon I can always be sure that I can put Brena and the kids first.

What’s the thing you least enjoy about running your own business

Paying the taxes!

What has worked well about your business?

my-avon-storeOne of my favourite things at the moment that has helped me a lot is my new online platform My Avon Store. Now that we live in a digital age more people are shopping online and it’s a great way to be seen to people in the area that might not know that I’m so nearby. It enables me to work from wherever I am at whatever time of day. It’s already almost doubled my customers and the new ones I’ve had usually come back for more!

What’s been your biggest business mistake?  How did you deal with it?

When I first started I misread one of my orders and ended up ordering the wrong products. I didn’t panic and instead admitted to my customer that I’d made a mistake and to make up for it I ordered the right products on express delivery all out of my own back pocket.

 How do you fit in work with the family? Is your partner supportive of your business?

It works perfectly around my family. Because I’m my own boss I can choose my hours, help Brena out with her Avon business and sometimes even go out with the boys. Brena and I are extremely supportive of each other and we always make sure that whatever we do benefits the family as a unit.

 Are you working towards a financial goal for your business?

My main goal is to clear my debts, the same as most people. That way I can be carefree and spend money on the little things. My ideal scenario is to maximize my profit and minimize my hours so that I can spend as much time as possible at home.

Would you ever give up your business to do something else?

No. I really enjoy running my Avon business, particularly after the launch of My Avon Store I’m finding myself expanding the business as I’m keen to get more involved.  

Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment?  Tell us about it.  If not when do you think it will come –

Every campaign that I’ve done I’ve managed to get regular committed customers. Knowing that I have a loyal base of customers has made me feel like this is something I could really build and expand.  

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?

Ideally I will be debt free, with more time to spend with the people I care about and will have expanded my business possibly even into a Sales Leader role. I’m very positive about the future.
