My business has helped me through the worst years of my life

MagdelenaA report by UK Domain shows that 54 per cent of millennial mums who returned to traditional employment after maternity leave say they struggled to juggle family life with a ‘9 to 5’. Read on to find out how widow and mother-of-two Magdelena Patelka has found a profession that offers both flexibility and financial security for her family.

When Magdalena sadly lost her husband in 2014, she was still managing financially thanks to the business she set up in 2006. The success of the business has helped her to buy a family home and regularly takes her daughters on magical holidays to Disneyland. Avon has had an incredible impact on the Patelka family, not only does her business allow Magdalena to work flexibly, but it’s also seen her through an incredibly difficult time.

“The last couple of years have been very hard, but I’m focussed on providing a good life for my girls, I don’t want them to miss out on anything. I’m saving to send them both to university so they can follow their dreams, like I am”

Feeling uninspired by her job as a housekeeper and looking for a way to spend more time with her two young daughters, Magdalena knew something needed to change. After being handed a brochure by a local Avon Representative, Magdalena looked into the opportunity and signed up, placing a small order of just £30.

“When I started I thought I’d just see if it was something I enjoyed. A friend of mine lived in a house-share with lots of people and I went over and chatted to them about my business for a couple of hours, afterwards they placed an order of £200. That’s when I knew this was something I could make a success of.”

Magdalena started to place larger orders to keep up with the demand from her customers. After just one year as a Representative she decided to leave her housekeeping job, and become a full-time Sales Leader knowing she would have the opportunity to manage her business and team flexibly at times which fit around her busy schedule. Running her own business has boosted Magdalena’s confidence hugely, and allowed her to build business skills at the same time. After ten years, the business has gone from strength to strength, and she has a team of over 1,500 Representatives.

After working hard for five years, Magdalena has just won a brand new car through Avon’s Drive Leadership programme. After selecting a Vauxhall Mokka, it will be easier to keep up with her growing team around the UK.

“I’ve worked hard to get to this point, but my goal is to become a Senior Executive. I want to show everyone on my team what’s possible with their own businesses. I genuinely enjoy what I do, and the people I work with and it’s amazing to be able to inspire others.”
