Fashion trends for Autumn 2020

Autumn is officially upon us, and with it a sudden change in the weather. Already we’re starting to see the new seasons’ trends come pouring in, and with them a goodbye to the bright colours of summer in favour of a more natural palette.

With many of us currently working from home, the opportunity is ripe for a wardrobe clear-out in preparation for the approaching season. What with juggling work, domestic tasks and school runs it can be difficult to stay on top of the autumn/winter fashions – fortunately, we’ve put together a few tips and top trends with the help of mum-of-three Emma Willis, and her latest collection with Next.

Featuring oversized coats, matt boots and classic heritage prints, the latest Emma Willis Collection incorporates some of the latest autumn trends, perfect for the phase into the cooler months.

While summer was all about bold colours and patterns, this autumn we’re going back to basics with warm neutral tones and a more natural colour palette. Creams and camels, beiges and tans are all the rage this season, the perfect fit for transitioning to colder weather.

With many of us working from home, neutrals are a no-fuss stylish option which adds just that bit of professionalism.

Natural tones are also ideal for those who aren’t too comfortable with colour, and give off that sophisticated feel while remaining subtle. If you want to make a little more of a statement, pair up a neutral top with a patterned jacket or bottoms. You can also pair it with the best mudcloth bags and you will be astounded how great it looks together.

Heritage clothing is back in a big way, with the cooler weather calling for timeless tweeds and classic-cut jackets. While vintage styles have been popular for a long time, they risk looking a little stuffy if paired too formally.

To channel that perfect blend of old-meets-new, contrast more casual pieces like jeans and trainers with a classic tweed jacket or Emma’s favourite, the checked blazer:

“Two things I love are blazers and checks…so we’ve done a checked blazer!! And we’ve done it in two different types of checks!”

Turtlenecks are always a great pairing for a cosy but chic vibe – just make sure to go for a subdued block colour to avoid a clash.

As with heritage clothing, 90s trends have been popular for a while and it’s no surprise we’re seeing them again this autumn. Wide leg trousers are a trendy and comfortable option, whether you’re out and about or pottering around at home.

The latest Emma Willis Collection features wide leg trousers in a relaxed fit with plenty of breathability:

“We’ve done a brand new shape of jean, they’re high and tight at the top so you feel nicely supported but cropped and loose at the bottom so you’re legs are FREE!” says the presenter-turned-designer.

For a smart-casual vibe, match your trousers with a pair of black ankle boots – an autumn staple that’s perfect for social and more formal occasions. Depending on what you’re wearing them with, ankle boots are a great way of injecting some personality while still looking put together.

Embrace another 90s trend by going grunge: contrast lace-up boots with a more feminine dress, such as the zebra tie neck dress from Emma’s collection.

The puffa jacket is here to stay, returning for yet another season. One particular trend we’re seeing this autumn is a lot of oversized styles, especially when it comes to coats and knitwear. The long, oversized puffa jacket therefore is a match you won’t want to miss:

“Last year’s puffer coat was really popular so we’ve decided to do it again but we’ve given it a little makeover! It’s slightly darker khaki, it’s got a bigger neck, bigger hood and we’ve also added in a black colourway!”

All black outfits are also popular this season, with black killer coats dominating the catwalks.

A thick coat or padded jacket is a staple as we head for the colder weather. Go for something loose and easy to move in, so that you won’t be restricted during a well-needed break from your work laptop.
