Parents in business: Karen of My Pets Ashes

Your name and age: Karen Martin, 50

Tell us about your family: Married to Rich & have 3 boys Dom (16), Leo & Hector (11), Pumpkin & Midnight (3) & on the cusp of getting a puppy too.

What did you do before coming up with your business idea and how was it making the transition? I was head of marketing for Triodos Bank

We launched in 2010. I set up a consultancy dealing with Oikocredit & then did contract work for Lloyds Bank whilst Rich started the Scattering Ashes blog. We started drop-shipping and then put a phone number on the website & started taking orders over the phone.

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?

It’s flexible and you’re in control, if it works you’re the one that caused it, if it doesn’t it’s the same! I like being pushed to achieve.

What’s the thing you least enjoy about running your own business?

Paperwork & admin

What has worked well about your business?

That it’s a niche and really genuinely helps people to find innovative solutions in often a very difficult point in their life.

What’s been your biggest business mistake?

Our biggest mistake was not taking on staff early enough, we hired someone and are just about to take another person on.

How do you fit in work with the family?

Rich and I take it in turns to be home in time for the kids & we try to take most holidays off with them or juggle our days so that we get time with them to do all the fun stuff.

Are you working towards a financial goal for your business?

Looking to grow the business to a saleable state.

Would you ever give up your business to do something else?

I am starting another business at the moment which should run in parallel until we’re in a position to sell.

Have you had your ‘I’ve made it’ moment?

I’ve had several! Any morning when I’m running through the Devon countryside before going into work. When we have a family chat about how to improve the business. When we’re in the media. I would like to be a real presence on Instagram.

Where do you hope to be in five years time?

Living where I am and running the next business.

As a family friendly company we offer everyone flexibility to find a solution that works for them and their children/pets.
